Do you know that the words you use can make a big difference in how you help others? If you're a coach or want to be one, pay attention! Let's talk about how the words you say can boost your impact on your clients.
First off, let's talk about some big words called "universal quantifiers." These are words that mean "all," "every," "always," "never," and stuff like that. They make things sound like they're true all the time, but that's not always the case. Here's how they work:
Imagine you're coaching an entrepreneur, like Sarah. She says, "I always mess up my pitches." Now, "always" is a universal quantifier. It makes it sound like Sarah messes up every single time, which might not be true. So, you could ask Sarah, "Are there any times when your pitches went well?" This helps her see that it's not always true.
Next up, we have "Modal Operators." These are words that show necessity or possibility, like "must" or "can't." For example, if your client says, "I must have a perfect plan," you could ask, "What would happen if your plan wasn't perfect?" This helps them see that they don't need perfection to succeed.
Now, let's talk about "Complex Equivalents." These are words that make one thing mean another. Like saying, "Money equals happiness." But we all know money isn't the only thing that makes us happy, right? So, if a client says that, you could ask, "What else makes you happy besides money?"
Lastly, "Presuppositions" are assumptions we make without realizing it. Like saying, "Everyone hates my product." But does everyone really hate it? To help, you might ask, "Who do you know that actually likes your product?"
So, why does this matter? Well, using these techniques can make you a better coach. You'll help your clients see things in a new light. They'll feel understood and motivated to make positive changes.
Remember, it's not just about what you say, but how you say it. Use these simple tricks, and you'll supercharge your coaching impact in no time!
