Conversational Postulates: Questions That Are Really Requests
Updated: Oct 8
"Can you pass the salt?" Nobody answers "yes" and leaves the salt where it is. It's a question in form and a request in function, and everyone instinctively knows which one to respond to.
In coaching or leadership, "could you have that ready by Friday?" is softer than a direct instruction, but it still gets the job done, because both people understand the real intent underneath the polite wrapping.
Putting the Pattern to Work
The risk is when the softness is mistaken for genuine optionality. If Friday isn't actually optional, say so clearly somewhere in the conversation.
Notice how much smoother requests land when they're dressed as questions, and how often you already do this without thinking.
