Precision Communication: Get Your Message Noticed, Understood and Remembered

Every day you send messages you think are clear: emails, proposals, pitches, feedback, the paragraph on your website, the first minute of a talk. And every day some of them arrive as something else. Nobody tells you. They just don’t act, or they act on the wrong thing.

Precision Communication is a practical book about closing that gap. It treats communication the way engineers and biologists treat signals: something that has to be noticed among competing noise, understood the way you meant it, and remembered long enough to matter. It gives you a model you can use on any message: the Precision Lens, five settings (Contrast, Focus, Resolution, Distance and Frame) that decide what your receiver notices, builds and concludes.

The tools come from Neuro-Linguistic Programming, which began as a serious attempt to work out what exceptional communicators actually do with language. You’ll learn more than twenty precise distinctions, from embedded commands and sensory predicates to nominalisations, presuppositions and the Meta Model. Each one is tied to what research in psychology and linguistics has found, and each one is honest about what the evidence does and doesn’t support. No mind-control claims and no hacks: just a much sharper way of seeing, and building, language.

What is inside

  • Why messages don’t arrive: the conduit fallacy, the curse of knowledge, the limits of human attention, and what AI-scale text has done to the value of “sounding professional”.
  • Communication as signal construction: what signal-detection theory and animal-signalling research reveal about getting noticed, and why specific claims are believed and vague ones aren’t.
  • The Precision Lens: five settings, one chapter each, with exercises on your own real emails, bios, pitches and questions.
  • Speech and writing, separately: how the same principle behaves differently in a meeting, a sales call, a presentation, an email, a proposal and a post.
  • Commercial precision: why “I help people transform their lives” doesn’t work, and what does.
  • The ethics of influence: three tests to tell honest influence from manipulation, and why counterfeit precision damages trust for everyone.
  • The Precision Audit: a quick eight-question check and a full diagnostic for consequential messages, with a worked example.
  • A five-week practice plan, a pattern glossary and one-page references to keep.

Who it is for: anyone whose work depends on being understood, including managers, consultants, coaches, trainers, salespeople, founders and freelancers. It covers spoken and written communication, in commercial and non-commercial settings. You do not need any background in NLP.

If you’ve been to one of my live sessions on linguistic precision: you’ll recognise three of the distinctions, and see the larger instrument they belong to. If you haven’t: you don’t need to have been. The book starts at the beginning.

By Darren Shaw, BSc, Founder and Steward of the Method and trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (PGNLP, ANLP, JSLP). The methods in this book increase the probability that your message is noticed, understood and remembered. They do not guarantee a result, and the examples illustrate a method rather than a promise of outcomes.

  • What’s included

Eighteen chapters in five parts: why messages don’t arrive, the Precision Lens model and where it comes from, the five settings in depth (Contrast, Focus, Resolution, Distance, Frame), precision in speech, in writing and in commercial communication, and the ethics, audit and practice plan to keep developing the skill. Includes a one-page Precision Lens summary, a printable Precision Audit, a pattern glossary and full references.
