Two Ways to Talk About the Same Problem
Updated: 6 days ago
Take the exact same issue and run it through two different conversations. In the first, ask what the problem is, what caused it, who's to blame, and why it keeps happening. In the second, ask how you'd like the situation to be instead, what resources you already have, and what's already partly working, even a little.
Same problem. Same person. Radically different conversation — and if you've never run this comparison deliberately, it's worth doing once, because the difference is more visible in practice than it sounds like it should be in theory.
The problem-focused interview isn't wrong. Sometimes you genuinely need to understand a root cause before you can act. But run on its own, it tends to leave people more aware of the problem and no closer to moving, because analysis of what's broken doesn't automatically produce energy to fix it.
Putting the Pattern to Work
The solution-focused version asks a different set of questions entirely: what would it take to get what you want, what resources do you need, what do you already have, and — the one that does the most work — how far have you come already? Even in a situation someone describes as stuck, there are usually traces of the solution already present, and naming them changes the emotional weight of the whole conversation.
Try both, back to back, on something you're currently wrestling with. Notice which one leaves you with more energy to actually move. That's not a coincidence — it's the whole point of the comparison.
