The Journey Every Client Is Already On
Updated: Oct 8
Joseph Campbell spent years studying myths from cultures with no contact with each other and found the same underlying shape repeating: a hero's journey, with recognisable stages that show up whether the story is three thousand years old or told last week by someone sitting across from you.
It starts with a calling — usually arriving at a genuine transition point, often uncomfortable, sometimes physically or emotionally so. People frequently try to ignore the calling. It rarely goes quietly; ignored callings tend to get louder, not fainter.
Then comes crossing the threshold — the point of no return, where the old way of operating no longer fits and there's no way back to not knowing what you now know. This is usually where people feel most lost, and it's also, not coincidentally, where the actual growth happens.
Making the Call
Along the way there are guardians — the specific relationships that help someone cross a threshold, build a needed skill, or simply stay oriented when everything feels uncertain — and there's a challenge to face, something that directly opposes or tests the person in a way the earlier, more comfortable version of them couldn't have handled.
If you're working with someone — or working on yourself — this map is useful less as a story to admire and more as a diagnostic. Which stage are you actually in right now? People often assume they're stuck when they're really just mid-threshold, and the two need completely different kinds of support.
If you want to turn conversations into clients, Confident Discovery Calls shows you how to use NLP on your next call.
