The Coaching Question That Cuts Through the Noise
Updated: 6 days ago
Most coaching conversations start with "what do you want?" It's a fair question, but it rarely gets past the surface. There's a sharper version, one that comes from the logical-levels work developed by Robert Dilts, and it goes further than goal-setting ever does.
The idea is simple: any issue you're facing shows up at more than one level at once. There's the environment you're in, the behaviour you're doing, the capability behind it, the belief or value driving it, and — underneath all of that — a sense of identity. Most people try to solve a values-level problem with an environment-level fix, which is why the fix never sticks.
Here's the sharper question, and it works at any level:
"how well does this choice fit with your highest values, your sense of who you are?"
Every hour of your day, you're voting — with your time, your energy, your attention — for something and against something else. Most of those votes happen on autopilot. This question forces them into view.
Putting It Into Practice
Try it on one decision this week — something small, like how you spent your last free evening. Ask honestly: what was that a vote for? If the answer makes you wince slightly, that's useful information, not a failure. That wince is exactly where the real work starts.
This is the level most coaching conversations skip. It's also the level where change that lasts actually gets built.
