Setting goals, is more important than you might think
Imagine you can see an object in front of you and you need to pick it up for some reason. You feel an impulse in your body, which leads to a thought to 'pick it up'.
That emotional impulse you have before you have the conscious thought to achieve the goal, is what runs your life, so that most of the decisions you make are run outside of your awareness and you only become aware of them after you have had feelings about them.

Now, expand this principle to thinking about some more abstract goals that you have located in the future, but currently only a figment of your imagination. Think of your future goal as an object that is tangible because you can see it in your mind, hear some associated sound(maybe the words in your head?) and feel it in your body... that impulse you feel before you make a conscious choice...
Whether the object is external and perceivable by you, or internal and perceivable by you, it uses all the same mechanisms of the brain.
So, why is it more difficult to manifest the behaviour involved in picking up the goal than picking up object x? Well, in order to do the goal, you need to do the state again and again in order to keep focused on attaining the future goal... one of the ways we can do this using NLP is through something called 'anchoring', which requires you to place the 'impulse' on autopilot by associating it with some stimuli that triggers every day, every hour, every month, keeping you focused and conscious of what you are trying to achieve.
